Aussie cloud computing host, 6YS, deploys Brocade Ethernet Fabric and routing infrastructure

6YS Deploys High-Performance, Highly Scalable Network Infrastructure in Anticipation for Massive Business Growth

6YS, a pioneer Australian provider of hosted application and cloud computing services, has deployed an Ethernet Fabric and routing infrastructure from Brocade® (NASDAQ: BRCD) as a foundation for the rapid growth of its IRONPOINT infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) offering, which the company expects to grow 200 percent year-over-year.

After a highly-successful trial, 6YS has deployed Brocade VDX 6720 Data Center Switches at its two data centers as the basis of a single, scalable Ethernet Fabric. Brocade VCS (Virtual Cluster Switching) Fabric Technology, supported in Brocade VDX switches, is one of the “best of breed” technologies from key partners that 6YS is leveraging within its IRONPOINT Enterprise Cloud Architecture.

“Our goal for IRONPOINT is to provide enterprise-class IT infrastructure to small and medium business customers at a public cloud price point,” said Martin von Stein, CTO, of 6YS. “Brocade's VDX is the heart of the Ethernet Fabric and is the holy grail of what we were aiming to achieve in terms of networking our virtual data center infrastructure. This is achieved at a very competitive price and has been backed by a level of engagement with Brocade that makes us very comfortable with our choice of strategic network technology.”

6YS has positioned IRONPOINT as a “best of breed” IaaS offering that provides an elastic, scalable virtual environment where its clients and channel partners can quickly and easily provision individual server and network resources or entire virtual data center environments at the click of a button. In the “Australia’s Trusted Infrastructure-as-a-Service Cloud Provider Market 2012” report published by Australian analyst firm Longhaus in February 2012, 6YS was ranked 12th out of 170 Cloud vendors, out-pacing local providers such as Telstra and Ninefold and was identified as a challenger to market leaders, IBM and Fujitsu.

Brocade VCS Fabric Technology comprises three main technology pillars: Ethernet Fabric, Distributed Intelligence, and Logical Chassis. Leveraging these pillars Brocade VCS fabrics are self-forming and self-aggregating, making them very elastic and enabling real-time scaling.

The fabric is automatically aware of all devices (servers, switches, and appliances) within its domain. Users can add and remove switches from a VCS fabric without any manual configuration, and physical and virtual servers can be located on any connection without the fabric requiring manual reconfiguration. Inter-switch trunks are also created dynamically without user intervention.

The net result is a non-stop network that “just works” for 6YS with minimum human intervention while allowing for evolutionary change by inter-operating with existing Ethernet and Fiber Channel networks.

“6YS is well known for successfully pioneering software as a service, which is really the forerunner of the cloud computing services we are starting to see today,” said Graham Schultz, Brocade’s Regional Director for the Australia and New Zealand region. “Given its track record of delivering high-quality services to the SME sector we are thrilled that 6YS is embracing Brocade VCS as a core part of its technical architecture as it moves fast forward with IRONPOINT.”

As well as the VDX 6720 switches 6YS has also deployed Brocade NetIron CER 2024 routers to provide multi-carrier Metro Ethernet interconnects between its two virtual data centers.

About Brocade Data Center Networking and Ethernet Fabric Solutions
Network architects are now looking for ways to build more powerful, flatter networks that can support higher traffic loads and increased east-to-west traffic in virtualized environments, all while avoiding network congestion. Collapsing network layers also reduces complexity, which lowers overhead costs and reduces risk. This type of design, however, requires high-density, high-bandwidth network components that deliver full wire-speed connectivity. With Ethernet fabric technology and the industry's most powerful routers for enterprise data centers, Brocade can help organizations build flatter, simpler networks today -- and at measurably lower cost than the competition.
